hot tub filter

Ensuring your hot tub filter is working properly is very important if you want to get the most out of your spa. Read on to find out how a hot tub filter works.

What Is a Hot Tub Filter?

A hot tub filter is a device that filters out unwanted particles from the water in your tub. As the water circulates through the pumping system, it is brought in from the tub, pushed through the filter, and then pumped out for you to soak in.

The filter physically traps dirt and debris, removing it from the water as it circulates through the hot tub system. If the filter stops working, or gets too clogged, you might start seeing cloudy water.

Hot Tub Filter Types

There are several types of hot tub filter on the market. Here at Premier Hot Tubs, we use cartridge filters. These are the most common type of filter, and are very easy to maintain.

Cartridge filters consist of pleated paper or fabric, similar to a lint trap or vacuum cleaner filter.

You can also find ceramic filters, which use a porous material to trap very small particles. This makes them very effective at removing allergens, but difficult to clean. Sand filters and diatomaceous earth filters both use a fine powder to trap unwanted particles, but both are quite difficult to clean.

How to Clean a Hot Tub Filter

Cleaning a hot tub filter is a simple task, though it may require some elbow grease!

Once you’ve brushed away any larger deposits of dirt, you can clean your filter in a variety of ways.

The easiest is probably using a dishwasher: place the filter in the dishwasher, run it on its hottest setting, and rinse when the cycle is finished.

Soaking the filter in a solution of one part vinegar to three parts water will take a few hours to work fully, but will break down dirt and odours.

If you would prefer a more powerful cleaning agent, you can soak your filter for a couple of hours in a solution of one part bleach to ten parts water.

You should thoroughly rinse the filter after cleaning, and allow it to dry fully before reinstalling it.
