Hot tub left on

One question that we get asked a lot is whether you should keep your hot tub on all the time. This is an extremely common question, and we've seen come up a lot more since the cost of living crisis has been introduced in the UK.

Is it better to leave my hot tub on?

If you're here for the quick answer - yes, it's 100% better to leave your hot tub on and running even when you're not using it.

You may be surprised by this answer, but there are actually many benefits to leaving your hot tub on and running. After all, your hot tub is literally designed to stay on all the time.

Why should I leave my hot tub on all the time?

1. It's more efficient

When you keep your hot tub on, you're giving your hot tub a chance to use energy efficiently. It's also way more cost-effective than turning your hot tub on and off again all the time.

At this point, you're probably wondering why. Whilst it does take a lot of energy to initially heat up a cold hot tub to your desired temperature, it will only require tiny amounts of energy to keep it there.

As you can imagine, if you keep turning your hot tub off and back on again, it will use the large amount of initial energy each time to increase the temperature. This will happen more frequently in winter as the temperature will be colder, meaning your hot tub will use more energy and time to heat up.

Put simply, it's better to keep a hot tub on consistently as turning it on and off again will use more energy and it will take more time to heat up, resulting in more cost for you!

2. It's designed to stay on

No matter what weather the British climate throws us, hot tubs are designed to be used 365 days a year. In short, you shouldn't need to turn your hot tub off unless you're going away for 4 weeks or longer.

If you use your hot tub infrequently, then instead of turning it off completely, we'd suggest leaving the spa running on a lower temperature.

3. It's safer

When you turn off your hot tub, you're giving harmful bacteria a chance to form and settle within your hot tub water. Also, if you turn your hot tub off with water still inside, all of the hot tub chemicals you use in your water will bond and create a layer on the floor of your hot tub which is difficult and unpleasant to clean.

If you're thinking about turning your hot tub off over winter, we'd strongly suggest that you don't do this. Why? If you haven't completely drained your hot tub, the remaining water will freeze and this can permanently damage the pipework, leading to hefty repair costs.
