SHORT ANSWER: To empty your hot tub, you can either use the tub's built-in drain valve or a submersible pump. We generally recommend using a pump because it's much faster (a submersible pump can typically drain a hot tub in just 10 to 15 minutes) and because you're less likely to get airlocks and error codes.
Draining your hot tub is a routine part of proper spa maintenance. Emptying your tub correctly will save time, help protect the internal components, and make the whole cleaning and refilling process much easier.
In this guide, we will explain how to empty your hot tub safely, where to find the drain valve, and why we usually recommend using a submersible pump instead.

How to Drain a Hot Tub
There are two main ways to drain a hot tub:
- opening the tub's drain valve
- using a submersible pump
Both methods work fine, but one is much quicker and more convenient than the other. If you want to empty your hot tub the simple and speedy way, we recommend using a submersible pump and directing the water to a nearby drain or ditch via a length of hose.
This method has a few important advantages:
- First of all, it's faster. Instead of waiting a few hours for the water to trickle out through the drain valve, a submersible pump should be able to empty your hot tub in 10 to 15 minutes.
- Another big advantage is that this method removes the water directly from the shell rather than draining it out through the tub's pipework. This can help to reduce the risk of airlocks and control panel error codes when you refill and restart your tub.
Submersible pumps are widely available (check Amazon or eBay) and don't tend to cost too much, so they are well worth having if you plan to drain and clean your hot tub regularly.
Using the Drain Valve
Your hot tub will also have a built-in drain valve, and it's useful to know where this is and how it works even if you do not plan to rely on it as your primary draining method.
If you bought your hot tub from Premier Hot Tubs, the drain valve is right next to the overflow valve on the opposite side from the control panel, low down on the black base of the cabinet.
The drain valve usually has a removable end bung and a twist mechanism that opens and closes the valve. To let water out of your hot tub, simply remove the end bung and twist the valve open. When you're finished, close the valve and replace the bung. Simple!
How Often Should I Empty My Hot Tub?
Most hot tubs should be drained and refilled every 3 to 4 months, although the exact timing will depend on how often you use the tub and how well the water is maintained.
If your spa sees a lot of use, you may need to change the water more frequently. If usage is lighter and you stay on top of your chemical balance and filter cleaning, you may be able to stretch things a little further. Either way, regular draining is an important part of keeping your hot tub clean, efficient, and pleasant to use.
