How to Keep Leaves Out of Your Hot Tub

As Autumn rolls in and leaves begin to fall, you may start to see an increasing number of leaves and other debris finding their way into your hot tub. Leaves are not only unsightly and unpleasant to soak with, but they can also cause damage to your tub by limiting water flow and clogging drains, filtration systems and pumps.

These issues can lead to growing energy costs as the pump has to work harder to keep the hot tub functioning – so it’s safe to say that you will want to try and prevent leaves and debris from entering your hot tub as best as you can.

To find out how you can keep leaves out of your hot tub, keep reading this blog!

 1. Use a Well-Fitting Hot Tub Cover

The first step to keeping leaves out of your hot tub is to buy a high-quality and well-fitting hot tub cover. This cover acts as a physical barrier against debris like leaves and dirt. Some hot tub owners also choose to use a secondary mesh leaf cover on top of the main cover for added protection. To prevent leaves from getting underneath your hot tub cover, you can buy sturdy straps that ensure the cover remains tightly in place.

2. Install a Physical Barrier

A more permanent solution to keeping leaves out of your tub is to install a physical leaf barrier, like a fence or hedge. This should help to block windblown leaves and also block some of the wind so that you can enjoy your nightly soak in peace! As a temporary solution, you can also use umbrellas to block any leaves blowing in the direction of your tub.

3. Prune Surrounding Trees

To reduce the amount of falling leaves and debris, regularly trim the trees and bushes around your hot tub. This should help you keep your hot tub clean and allow you to cut down on the amount of time you spend scooping leaves and debris out of your water.

4. Use a Leaf Net

Regularly use a leaf net to remove leaves and other floating debris as soon as they appear in your tub. If you let the leaves sit in the water, they can decompose and cause staining and algae growth which will mess up the chemical balance of your spa’s water. So, keep your water balanced and pumps working efficiently by removing any leaves ASAP.

For leaves that have sunk to the bottom of the spa, spa vacuums (similar to our spa vacuum broom) can be used to collect them without disturbing the water too much.

By putting in effort to keep leaves and debris out of your tub, you can keep your maintenance costs down and reduce the frequency of draining and chemically balancing your spa water.
